Il Gallo d'Oro is the gourmet restaurant at the five-star hotel The Cliff Bay [Funchal, Island of Madeira, Portugal]
Since 2004 its cuisine has been under the stewardship of French Chef Benoît Sinthon. In 2009, Il Gallo d'Oro received the first Michelin star in Madeira. This was renewed consecutively until 2017, when it was awarded two Michelin stars which it has kept to this day. In the 2023 edition of the prestigious guide, the restaurant led by Chef Benoît Sinthon was also distinguished with a 'Green Star', which rewards sustainability in gastronomy.
The menu at Il Gallo d'Oro has brought the refinement of aromatic cuisine to the table, inspired by Iberian cooking. Chef Benoît Sinthon gives great prominence to ingredients from Madeira, some of them grown in the PortoBay vegetable garden. This means fresh produce plays a key role in his creations, combined with high-quality ingredients from other parts of Europe.
Il Gallo d'Oro reopened in 2021 with a total refit in the dining room. With more modern, contemporary touches and large windows that run along the front of the restaurant, the room has gained a luminosity that matches the warm colours of the décor and the freshness of the many green plants both inside and outside.
The entrance to the restaurant is through the wine cellar. This brings renewed emphasis on the wines and a pleasing ambience in terms of light, temperature and humidity.
The outdoor terrace overlooking the hotel gardens and the sea provides the ideal setting for dining on the warmest days of the year.
The big innovation in the restaurant refurbishment is the 'Chef's Table', located in the centre of the room which provides a unique and memorable dining experience.
