PORTOBAY CLASSIC TALENTS

On 26 and 28 November, The Cliff Bay hotel and the Vila Porto Mare resort will host PortoBay Classic Talents, a special concert by Legno Duo: Joana Costa and Duarte Santos, aimed at strengthening the connection to Madeira’s culture and honouring the musicians who contribute to the island’s cultural heritage.

The Madeiran artists present a repertoire that highlights two wooden instruments — marimba and violin — in a rich and expressive sound fusion.

DUARTE SANTOS – MARIMBA

Duarte Santos began his percussion studies at the Conservatório Escola das Artes da Madeira and completed the Percussion Instrumentalist course at the Escola Profissional Metropolitana in Lisbon. In 2014, he won 1st Prize in Percussion at the Concorso Musicale Europeo Città di Filadelfia (Italy) and took part in the European premiere of a work by Peter Klatzow with the Filarmonia das Beiras Orchestra.

He collaborates regularly with the Gulbenkian Orchestra and has performed with several national ensembles, such as the Madeira Classical Orchestra, the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra and the Metropolitana Orchestra. He completed a Master’s in Music Teaching at the University of Minho and has been, since 2020, Principal Timpanist A and head of the percussion section of the Madeira Classical Orchestra.

JOANA COSTA – VIOLIN

She began her musical studies at the age of 7 at the Conservatório Escola Profissional das Artes da Madeira (CEPAM) in the class of Olga Proudnikova. She furthered her training in Italy and Finland, participating in various orchestras such as J.Futura International, the Orchestra of the Official Conservatories of Music, and Momentum Perpetuum, under conductors such as Martin André and Joana Carneiro.

With a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Music from the University of Minho, she is currently a member of the Madeira Classical Orchestra, performing both orchestral and chamber music.
