Special Safety Measures at Madeira

Special Safety Measures at Madeira

(LAST UPDATED: January 13, 2022)

Madeira island has implemented special safety measures. The measures implemented in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve do not apply to the island of Madeira*.

* As from December 1st, it is mandatory to present a negative test upon arrival in Portugal (antigen test 48 hours before boarding or PCR test 72 hours before boarding), even for holders of a vaccination certificate. Self-tests are not valid.
Although Madeira is not covered by this measure, we advise you to consult your airline to check what measures they have implemented.

Until January 31, the following measures are in force:

- mandatory use of a mask indoors and outdoors;

- it is recommended to present a vaccination certificate AND antigen test (performed in the last 7 days) in the following situations:

  • restaurants (except restaurants located in the hotel of accommodation);
  • bars (except bars located in the hotel of accommodation);
  • gyms (except gyms located in the hotel of accommodation);
  • gambling establishments;
  • movie theaters;
  • nocturnal activities;
  • nightclubs;
  • cultural events;
  • social events;
  • sports activities and events;
  • hairdressers

- it is recommended to present a vaccination certificate OR antigen test (performed in the last 7 days) in the following situations:

  • public transport;
  • supermarkets;
  • pharmacies;
  • grocery stores;
  • commercial centres;
  • clinics;
  • medical and dental;
  • veterinarians;
  • medical health and social support services;
  • public attendance services (Municipal Councils, Parish Councils, Citizen's Shop, Finance and Social Security services, Postal Services);
  • Churches and other places of worship;
  • Fuel stations.

TRAg screening tests for SARS-CoV-2 infection may be carried out, on a weekly basis, in pharmacies, laboratories, clinics and posts that adhere to the massive testing campaign of the Regional Government, without any charges for participants. See the list here.

Having in mind our guests' comfort, PortoBay Hotels & Resorts partnered with a local laboratory, which will be at the hotels, at a previously scheduled time, to carry out tests. Learn more here.

Exceptions: Children under 12 years old and persons who, for health reasons, cannot be vaccinated, are exempt from compliance with the measures indicated above (presentation of test and/or vaccines and COVID EU Digital Certificate) upon the submission of a formal medical certificate, as well as persons with a formal medical certificate certifying that the holder has recovered from the COVID-19 disease, issued within the last 90 days.

HOTELS are not covered by the measures of presentation of vaccination certificate and/or negative test. Thus, the entry and check-in process, as well as the use of hotel facilities and restaurants, will remain as usual. However, customers who are not staying in the hotel are subject to compliance with the above points.

These measures will be in effect until January 15th. We recommend that you follow the updates on the website www.madeirasafetodiscover.com .

The measures at Madeira Airport remain in force:

- Presentation on arrival at Madeira Airport of a negative Rapid Antigen Test (TRAg) for COVID-19, carried out within 48 hours prior to boarding. A negative PCR test carried out in the previous 72 hours before boarding is accepted, but is not required.

- Passengers who have not undertaken a Rapid Antigen Test (TRAg) at their location of origin will do so upon arrival at the airport, while fully complying with the surveillance and self-reporting of symptoms, as well as the COVID-19 preventive measures until a negative test result is obtained.

- Passengers who present a medical document certifying that they are recovered from COVID-19 disease upon disembarkation in Madeira (issued in the last 180 days), or that present a document certifying that they are vaccinated against Covid-19, are not required to do this test. The same applies to children up to 11 years old.

- Upon leaving Madeira, should there be a need to present a new test when entering the destination country, the expenses for carrying out a rapid antigen test (TRAg) will be borne by the Regional Government, in the following cases:

  • All passengers who have performed a TRAg test prior to arrival at the Region’s airports, at their own expense;
  • Children up to eleven (11) years old;
  • Travellers in possession of a medical document certifying that the bearer is recovered from COVID-19 disease upon disembarking in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, or travellers with a document certifying that they have been vaccinated against COVID -19, by the recommended plan and having respected the activation period of the immune system as provided for in the Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC);
  • Travellers with a medical document certifying that they were vaccinated with only one dose (in two-dose vaccination schemes), and having respected the activation period of the immune system as provided for in the SmPC, in the case of patients who are recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection for more than 180 days, or who have been diagnosed with the infection after having taken the first dose of the vaccine;
  • Passengers with the European Union Digital Covid Certificate.
