Carnival in Madeira has a long tradition dating back to the 19th century.
The Grand Allegorical Parade takes place on Saturday evening, 14 February, through the streets of Funchal. Over a thousand participants take part in the parade with stunning costumes, delighting everyone who watches.
On Tuesday afternoon, 17 February, the “Cortejo Trapalhão” parade showcases the more popular side of the festival, with a touch of social satire. Everyone is welcome to take part.
