Childbirth Masses

In Madeira, Christmas begins with the Missas do Parto (Childbirth Masses), a religious tradition that takes place in all the parishes of the island, nine days before Christmas. Each day represents a month of Mary’s pregnancy.

These masses are held every day between 5 and 7 a.m., at the transition from night to day, symbolizing the fact that Baby Jesus is the light born into the world.

Despite the early hour, the Missas do Parto are very well attended. They are sung masses and, at the end of the religious celebration, the churchyards are transformed into true spaces of fellowship and sharing. Coffee and hot cocoa are served, along with liqueurs, the traditional Madeiran poncha, and various delicacies typical of the Christmas season.

There is also musical entertainment… groups of singers are formed, performing traditional songs from this very special time, filling the atmosphere with joy and Christmas spirit!

one of Madeira's biggest religious traditions!
